Schizophrenia and Bipolar disorder. It was during these years that her perspective on healthcare began to shift. Working with this population Dr. Waters experienced tremendous joys and learning, but was also frustrated with the limitations of conventional medicine. She felt that there was something missing from our overall approach to health. Dr. Waters then began taking classes in and researching natural medicine. After several years as a mental health counselor she decided to pursue further studies in naturopathic medicine at the National College of Natural Medicine, where she graduated in 2005.
During her 5 years at the National College of Natural Medicine, Dr. Waters also became involved in extracurricular programs including; the massage curriculum at the Oregon School of Massage, Ayurvedic medical courses, craniosacral and myofascial therapy, Biotherapeutic drainage and homeopathy, ISABS (Indian Society of Applied Behavioral Sciences), volunteer hospice care, and courses at the Process Work Center where she completed a 5 week intensive in counseling and therapy. Additionally, Dr. Waters has worked in several of Portland’s community clinics treating primarily the underserved population, and has completed over 300 hours of preceptorship with a wide variety of MDs, NDs, and licensed acupuncturists.
In 2005-2006 Dr. Waters completed an Internship in New York where she worked on Naturopathic research and primary care. While Dr. Waters has been trained in conventional medical diagnosis, her treatment is primarily based upon the principles and philosophies of naturopathic medicine. Furthermore, what is of great importance to Dr. Waters is providing and promoting education about naturopathic medicine. “There are many avenues a person can choose from when deciding on their health care. I feel as though the most important aspect of what Dr. Mikulis and I do is to really teach people about naturopathic medicine and explain their options. In doing so, I hope to convey a better understanding of how one can achieve health and wellness.”
Dr. Waters’ area of focus includes, but is not limited to, nutritional and lifestyle counseling, botanical medicine, homeopathy, Biotherapeutic drainage, women’s health, craniosacral therapy, and the Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Massage. She has completed the professional series in Arvigo massage and looks forward to teaching others about the great benefits of abdominal massage. Additionally, Dr. Waters promotes and discusses the benefits she has experienced personally from movement and therapeutic arts such as process work, dance, and yoga.
Dr. Waters is cofounder and Clinical Director of Living Natural Family Medical Center in Nashua, New Hampshire where she currently practices. |
